Dave Reese graduated from Chambersburg Area Senior High School in June 1976. He enlisted in the U.S. Air
Force and began active duty in March 1978. He completed Basic Military Training in April 1978. From there he graduated from
Basic Russian Language Training at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Monterey, California, in February
1979, followed by technical training and aircrew survival training as an Airborne Cryptologic Linguist in September 1979.
From September 1979 to August 1987, Dave was assigned to the 6990th Electronic Security Group, Kadena Air Base, Okinawa,
Japan, where he held the positions of RC-135 RIVET JOINT Airborne Mission Supervisor, Aircrew Evaluator, E-3 AWACS Area Specialist,
and Noncommissioned Officer In Charge of Advanced Systems Analysis. Dave also served with the 6949th Electronic Security Squadron,
Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, as RC-135 RIVET JOINT and COMBAT SENT Airborne Mission Supervisor, Deputy Chief of Standardization/Evaluation,
and Noncommissioned Officer In Charge of Mission Analysis.
During these periods, Dave directed numerous overseas aircrew
deployments and operational missions out of Clark Air Base, Philippines; RAF Mildenhall, England; and Hellenikon Air Base,
Greece.
After completing electronic combat training at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, Dave was assigned to
the 6919th Electronic Security Squadron at Sembach Air Base, Germany, from April 1990 to July 1991, where he worked as EC-130H
COMPASS CALL Mission Crew Supervisor and Noncommissioned Officer In Charge of Operations Plans and Readiness.
In June
1991, Dave was selected for special duty as a Human Resources Intelligence Debriefer/Interrogator. After completing specialized
Department of Defense training, he was assigned to Detachment 31, Pacific Special Activities Area, later the 315th Intelligence
Squadron, at Yokota Air Base, Japan, from August 1991 to September 1995. There he served as Noncommissioned Officer In Charge
of Controlled Operations and later as Operations Superintendent.
In October 1995, Dave was assigned to the Defense
Intelligence Agency's Aerospace Research Liaison Office at Yokota Air Base, Japan, where he worked as Superintendent until
November 1998. He then returned to his old unit on Okinawa, now known as the 390th Intelligence Squadron, to work as the Operations
Superintendent.
Dave has amassed over 4800 hours of flying time on the RC-135M/U/V/W, EC-130H, and E-3A aircraft. He flew 28 combat and combat support missions targeted against Iraqi air defenses while deployed with the 7440th Combat Wing
(Provisional) to Incirlik AB, Turkey, with Joint Task Force PROVEN FORCE in support of Operations DESERT STORM and PROVIDE COMFORT.
Dave's military decorations include 1 Defense Meritorious Service Medal, 3 Meritorious Service Medals, 18 Air
Medals, 4 Air Force Commendation Medals, 1 Joint Service Achievement Medal, 1 Air Force Achievement Medal, 5 Combat Readiness
Medals, 1 Humanitarian Service Medal, 1 Southwest Asia Service Medal, 2 Kuwait Liberation Medals (one each from the governments
of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia), 1 National Defense Service Medal, and 1 Small Arms Marksmanship Ribbon. Dave was also a co-recipient
of the Central Intelligence Agency's Collector of the Year Award in 1992.
Dave retired from the active duty Air Force on September 30, 2000, at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He is now a civilian federal employee working as the Director of the U.S. Army Asian Studies Detachment
at Camp Zama, Japan. He also works part-time as a freelance Japanese-to-English translator. His professional translator credits include the book Democracy With A Gun: America and the Policy of Force,
by renown Japanese journalist Fumio Matsuo. Dave's civilian awards include two Army Achievement
Medals and the 500th Military Intelligence Group's Civilian Linguist of the Year Award for 2002.
Dave holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business and Management with a minor in Asian Studies from the University
of Maryland. He also holds an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Interpreting and Translating and a Certificate in Aerospace
Management from the Community College of the Air Force. Dave's travels have taken him to such varied locations as Austria,
Bangladesh, Canada, China, France, Germany, Greece, Guam, India, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Monaco, Philippines, Saipan, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.
Dave married the former Emiko Furugen of Kunigami Village, Okinawa, Japan, in 1982. They have one son, Keiri Furugen, who lives with his wife Hiromi and son
Shiryu in Higashiohmi City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan.
